Gazi Bay
Gazi Bay is a sheltered inlet on Kenya’s south coast, in Kwale County, about 50 kilometres south of Mombasa. Mangrove forests, shallow coastal waters and nearby fishing communities make it an important place for understanding the connections between coastal ecosystems and livelihoods. [1]
The bay has a long recent history of mangrove research and restoration. KMFRI established its Gazi Research Station in 1991. Work there has developed around mangrove ecology, carbon storage, coastal fisheries and mariculture, alongside participatory approaches to resource management. [1]
Gazi is also associated with Mikoko Pamoja, which links community-led mangrove conservation with carbon finance. Plan Vivo’s project records include its 2013 validation and subsequent annual reports. The related case study explains how the project works and directs readers to its documents. [2]
